The MILK with Exercise Study investigated whether milk can help overweight youth continue growing and be healthier when losing weight.
To do this, we tried to answer the following questions:
- How well does milk consumed following a workout help the body make protein?
- Does milk consumed following a workout help reduce inflammation after starting an exercise program?
What did this study involve?
This study involved fitness testing and assessment of body composition (muscle and fat). Participants then completed a short-term (1 week) exercise training program. They performed both aerobic (e.g. biking) and resistance training (e.g. weight lifting). The child drank either chocolate milk or an energy-matched beverage after each workout. At the end of the training program, we looked to see if there were changes in their fitness, strength, body composition, and inflammation levels.
Who participated in this study?
We had about 40 overweight boys (ages 11-15) and girls (ages 9-13) participate in this study.
What were the results?
We are putting together the findings right now – stay tuned!
