Exercise in the Heat

Thermoregulatory Responses of Boys and Men during Exercise in the Heat Study

The aim of the Exercise in the Heat Study was to investigate the impact of dehydration on thermoregulatory responses, such as heart rate, sweating, and body core temperature in boys and men cycling in the heat. To do this, we answered the following questions:

  • Do thermoregulatory responses differ in boys and men during exercise in the heat?
  • Does dehydration status affect temperature differently in boys and men during exercise in the heat at different exercise intensities?

What did this study involve?

This study involved a total of two visits for boys and three visits for men. At the first visit, we did assessments of body composition and fitness. During the second visit (and third for men), participants performed 80 minutes of cycling in the heat. We measured levels of dehydration and body temperature during exercise tests.

Who participated in the study?

  • Healthy and active boys (10 to 12 years old)
  • Healthy and active men (19 to 25 years old)

What are the results?

We are putting the results together – so stay tuned!
